Designing with Purpose: Creating Products That Live Beyond the Flight

As someone who works in product design, I spend a lot of time thinking about what makes something genuinely useful. For me, the most successful products aren’t just great in the moment, they’re the ones that continue to serve a purpose long after you first use them. That’s why I’m passionate about designing dual-use products - thoughtfully designed items that enhance the passenger experience in-flight and continue to serve a purpose long after the plane has touched down.

I still remember receiving an amenity kit from a flight I took years ago - I still use it to this day as a travel tech organiser. It holds my charging cables and earphones, and every time I pack it, I’m reminded of that journey and the happy memories of that particular trip.

That kind of longevity and emotional connection is exactly what we try to build into our products at PTP. It’s not just about reducing waste (though that’s a huge part of it); it’s about creating something that passengers want to keep using because it’s useful, well-designed, and seamlessly fits into their lives.

When I’m working on a new product, I always ask myself: Would I actually keep this? Would I use it at home, or on my next trip? If the answer’s no, then something in the design needs to shift. That’s the bar I try to set - because if we can create something that’s genuinely reusable, we’ve made something that adds value for both the passenger and the planet.

This idea of dual-use helps us reduce environmental impact, respond to growing passenger expectations for sustainability, and ensure that our products are genuinely helpful long-term. We think carefully about materials, durability, and how each item could be repurposed. It could be an eye mask that becomes part of a bedtime routine, or slippers that are perfect for keeping under your desk for a bit of workday comfort. It’s all about creating little moments of usefulness beyond the flight. To me, that’s good design. Not just beautiful or trendy, but thoughtful, functional, and worth holding onto.

We’ve moved beyond a time where disposable is acceptable - passengers are more mindful now. They want products that reflect their values, and reusability is right at the heart of that. I’m proud that our team is helping to shift the industry in this direction. Because the best inflight products don’t end when the flight does - they begin a second life in someone’s bag, home, or daily routine. And if we’ve made that happen through smart, considered design, then we’ve done something meaningful.

Inflight products that go the distance.
